The first female at facebook was an indian

"It was difficult to break into boy's club" is what this girl Ruchi Sanghvi says about her journey at Facebook. Revered for being the first female to be hired into Silicon valley's most celebrated startup , Ruchi Sanghvi has more feathers in her hat. She has been a Software Engineer in Real Time Communication Group at Oracle and has also co-founded Cove.

Currently working as VP Operations at Dropbox, she once mentioned in an interview with BBC that "The culture at Facebook, was something of a change. Programmers came to work in their pajamas, working in an office with walls covered in graffiti, located above a Chinese food place that stank up the whole building. It was also difficult to break into the boys’ club."

Daughter to a businessman father who owned an engineering company supplying equipments for industrial projects and who always mentioned engineering as a boy's field has been the major motivation for her and she wanted to prove him wrong. She has played a key role in some major projects at facebook like the News Feed and also led product management and strategy for facebook platform and facebook connect.

Kudos!

The tech-companies with coolest perks

Working in the NCR region, what could be best facilities that the companies here could provide- hmmm, maybe a TT table, an inhouse gym, late night cab facilities etc. Here have a look at the global giants that give some of the coolest facilities for a technical company.

5) Buy whatever you need @ Asana

A startup by facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz alongwith Justin   rosenstein , Asana provides its employees a stipend of $10,000 to
make their working area their own and "buy whatever they need" as
per their desire for their work area.

4) Zyngolidays @ Zynga

Zynga,  an interactive entertainment and social network service provider gives its employees some random holidays called Zyngolidays decided by CEO and executives. For eg: they gave
a full day off on 20th april this year.

3) Arcade gaming @ Kixeye

The flash gaming company , Kixeye has set up arcade gaming counters in the office premises
for employees who want to take a break from work, every now and then.

2) Build your computer @ Dropbox

An MIT student thought of creating a file hosting and cloud storage company after often
forgetting his USB flash drive during college days, and this
company Dropbox provides its employees a chance to build their own computers, and they also prize this kind of effort.

1) A hell lot of perks @ Google

Google gives so many perks that even the headline could not be a well suited one. And the list goes like, car washes, oil changes, massages, yoga, a play room, back-up child care assistance,
$12000 annual tuition reimbursements and the coolest one being the After life benefits in which if a Googler dies while employed, the surviving partner receives half the salary for next decade, all stocks vested immediately, and children of the daparted receiving $1000 a year, until they are 19, or 23 in case of full time education.

Mouse finally gets a replacement- The Forcepad

In the last decade, we have seen the laptops become smaller, the displays getting thinner, the sounds growing louder , the video getting clearer. But there was no major change in the way of navigation on a laptop, be it with use of mouse or trackpad.

Ideally, both used button clicks or tapping to activate a component on screen.

Finally breaking the monotony, Synaptics has come up with the Forcepad- A new way of navigating the laptop just by the application of pressure on a trackpad. So no more button clicks or tapping.

Interestingly, the forcepad can recognise 64 different levels of sensitivity and multi-touch support is also enabled, which means you can use a maximum of five fingers while working on forcepad.

So all in all, you can use drawing apps, gaming, scrolling through document or surfing the net just by varying the amount of pressure on the forcepad. And the forcepad is thinner, more accurate and has no moving parts. Some more awesome features in this video.

We may get to see this interesting stuff in laptops in early 2013.

It might be a rumour some time back but evidences of Google Play gift card have been pouring in since then.

According to Android Police, Google is gearing up to launch the gift cards which can be redeemed in the store for movies, music and premium apps. Adding to it, evidences were found in the APK code regarding linking to play.google.com/redeem, which currently gives the error "We're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server.".

Seems like its going to be a good gift this holiday season. Lets see when the official announcements are made!

Birds are "Super Angry" this time!!

Angry birds is undisputably the most loved game lately and they have been trying really hard to retrieve their golden eggs from green pigs. And adding a new dimension to the game, an interesting project by Andrew Spitz and Hideaki Matsui at Copenhagen Institue of Interactive Design introduced a physical contoller simulating a slingshot.

This slingshot can be connected to your pc using USB and control the speed and direction of angry birds and a separate "TNT" controller to utilise their special powers.

Watch the birds in action and how it works!

Using IE7? Pax extra for shopping with us

In a first of it's kind tax implemented, the Australian retail store kogan.com has put up an extra 6.8% tax on folks using IE7 for their online shopping. It sounds hillarious but as per the Chief Executive of kogan, this tax is meant to recoup the cost and time spent for "rendering the website on an antique browser".

Though only 3% of company's customers use IE7, the total cost involved in making the interface properly dispayed on IE7, the company incurred a cost equal to the combined cost for Safari,Chrome and firefox. And that is why, the tax has been levied.

Meanwhile, IE11 is slated to release next year.

Turning them on- Samsung vs Apple

In response to a lawsuit filed by Apple which says that Samsung devices are so similar that a consumer can mistake them for an Apple product, Samsung chose to clarify by turning on 3 device-2 phones and a tablet to show that Samsung devices are different from the moment they are turned on. Unlike the Apple devices which turn on showing the metallic bitten-apple logo, the Samsung Android series devices splashed with their logo followed by a robotic "Droid" animation.

Later Samsung pointed out that there are a number of steps to be followed before reaching the home screen to see the icons, something that again Apple had accused Samsung of copying. So, in no way they could be accused of being similar to Apple.

Its really surprising to hear the people can mistake a Samsung with Apple, or who buys a device without seeing the packaging or manufacturer. Though there were some cases of people returning Samsung Tablets mistaking them for ipads.
